Hi guys and welcome back to the Mindset Coach Academy Podcast. My name is Lindsey Wilson and today we're going to be talking about 360 degree goals. I like to call it 360 your goals because what I'm going to talk about today is really asking many, many, many, many questions about your goal. Now goal setting, I don't know, I love goal setting.
I like goal setting generally more for turning them into affirmations, which triggers a visualization. I find that to be stronger. I find that to be more in line with how my brain works and really all of our brains work as far as like getting the subconscious on board. So, you know, we teach all of that in our programs and I just find them to be much more actionable and just a more tangible way to actually work on the belief component of achieving your goals. Because I think that a lot of the way people teach goals is, I don't know, I don't want to be too judgy, but I just don't, I think a lot of it's surface. And you know, I think some of it is, is goal setting just got like really big a few years ago and it was like all about, and then manifesting came behind that, but it was all about like smart goals and make sure they're realistic and timely and whatever all the acronym was.
I don't even know because I don't do them. I think there's some good things with that, like the timely component, like making sure like you actually have a goal that like you know roughly how long it's going to take, or at least you have some time component in your brain. So it's not just a never ending goal.
I don't think that's helpful either. But the way that we teach goals in our programs is just so much more aligned with how the subconscious brain works. So we again, we take goals, we turn them into affirmations, we turn them into visualization that we practice that because the belief component is so, so important.
But that's not what we're talking about today, actually, we're talking about 360, 60, your goal, 360, your goals. Okay. So I'm going to give like a kind of basic example about like health and getting in better shape. Okay.
So let's see, because just because I think that's an easy example for everybody to understand. So let's say that you have a goal to get in better shape in the next six months or the next year. And you've taken the time already potentially to really think about what that would mean in your life.
Okay. Like I can play with my kids, I can feel better in my clothes, I can just feel more like myself, I can move my body without it hurting, I can wake up in the morning without pain, I sleep better, like all of those things, like that is to me, like the first step, because that's where motivation comes from, right, is like, there's, it's not about getting skinnier. Like that doesn't really motivate anybody usually, right, that's more of like a shame type thing.
What's going to motivate you is this future self where your life is better, and you have emotions around that, that's like the fuel for motivation. Okay. So that would say that's like the first step when it comes to three 16 year goals.
Okay. But here's where I think many people don't teach like really looking at the goal from different perspectives. And by doing in many ways, this is just asking the right questions.
Okay. So one thing that I've heard this from Rachel Hollis before, and many other people, of course, but like, what is it really going to take to accomplish that goal? Like, like brass tacks, what is it really going to take? And in many ways, this is like anticipating the discomfort of the goal. Because yes, we're going to be motivated by the feeling we're going to have at the end.
What about the discomfort that we're going to have in the beginning? Like, well, I'm going to have to throw out all the junk food, or I'm going to have to, you know, get up in the morning and exercise on days when it's rainy, right? I'm going to have to go to the gym after work when I'm already exhausted. And really, I want to go home and have a glass of wine and a cheeseburger. Right?
Like, what is it really going to take? And thinking through the times when it doesn't seem shiny and new and butterflies and rainbows. And I think this is really important because this is a little bit of the stress test. And this is where you build self belief and confidence in yourself. Don't go for goals that when you think about how hard it is, you, you don't really want it anymore. But you still tell yourself that you do. That's how to set yourself up for failure. And that is not how to build self confidence in yourself that you do what you say you're going to do.
Right? Because that's like really what we want out of goals is we want to set them and work on who we get to become in order to achieve the goal. Okay. So what would what is what is it really going to take?
Okay. What's the cost? Now, this could be non money cost. But I also like to think about the cost. Because I think it's like, it's just again, it's the 360 view, right? It's like, what are the ways that this is going to cost money?
And I think this is really important because again, it's like, well, is it really worth it to you? So maybe you're just take some money that you would have spent on eating out, and you need to take that money and go to Whole Foods and get some healthier food. Right? Whereas eating out is way more fun.
Right? So there's a monetary cost and a other cost in that one. But really writing those things down again, a 360 view. Okay. Here's a really good question too.
What can I do to increase the likelihood of my success in this goal? Oh my God, I love this question. Right? Because I think after you've had some of those realistic answers of what it's going to cost, how hard it's going to be, what's it really going to take, you then might be able to see, okay, so if I know that it's going to be really hard to go to the gym after work, maybe I could have a trainer. And if then we're going back to the money piece, that's going to cost some money. But you have it more like realistic in your brain. And then you're, you're able to really do the ROI on whether you still want this goal.
What else can you do to increase the likelihood of getting it? From the beginning, when you understand what the obstacles are, you know, then you have a problem you can solve ahead of time. Again, some of that might be money, some of that might be, I don't know, I'm going to schedule time to walk with a friend. I'm going to throw out all the junk food. I'm going to pre or, you know, meal plan.
I'm going to buy my groceries once a week and, you know, have the standing order. Like, again, while before you're in the discomfort, anticipating the discomfort, and then creating a plan for the discomfort, while you're really not uncomfortable yet is gold. It's gold. Okay. We mentioned this a little bit about it.
I would say just going a little bit deeper. What are the numbers behind the goal? So again, maybe that's some money. Maybe that's anything, you know, with health, maybe there are some weight loss type milestones.
Like, again, this is back of the napkin, but just like really getting your numbers written down. Like this is really what I hope. And you can kind of say, well, is that really realistic in that timeframe? Because when you're writing it, because sometimes I think in your brain, you can have like, oh, I want to lose this much weight in six months.
And it's like, is that actually possible? You know, like really getting your numbers. So you can do it realistically. And we do this in the, in our, well, a little bit in the certification, but definitely in our mastermind where we sit down and we get our monetary goal. And we plan it out over three years. Because what a lot of people will want to do is a little bit of a side note.
But this is where I think it's really, really important is if your numbers are too big, you know, whether that's weight loss or starting a business and you're like, let's say I want to go from zero, I've never made any money as a mental performance coach, I want to make $100,000. Okay. That's possible, but it's not possible probably in one year.
Why? Because there's all these things you need to know and before you're able to make money and that's probably gonna take a couple months, right? And what is possible is to move that out to two years or three years. And if we don't do that when it's six months in and we've made $10,000, then we wanna quit instead of saying, well, my goal wasn't realistic, right? And so the numbers are important because then you get that again, that kind of gut check on like, is this realistic? And if it's not, the other thing that it's gonna do, if it's not one, it's probably gonna set you up to wanna quit, but it's also potentially gonna activate your nerve system. So if your brain doesn't believe that it's possible and it's scary and it's new and it's like this huge big goal, some of us can maintain that big goal and it doesn't activate us, but a lot of us it does. And it's not like some of us do it and some of us don't. It's all perspective, it's all situational. But if it does activate it, then you're really working against yourself.
So knowing your numbers really, really important. Okay, these two questions are really, really fun. Okay, what is the best case scenario? And again, that might go back to like, when in the beginning when I talked about like, how are you gonna feel, right? Like, what is that gonna look like in your life? What's the best case scenario?
And then here's the next one. What's the worst case scenario? And will it still be worth it? I love this question. Okay, and this kind of moves into the next question, which is, who am I going to become in this process?
Full stop, I freaking love this question, okay? Who am I going to become in this process? This to me is like the crux of goal setting in general, okay? So who do you get to become by three 16 year goals, by working on the belief in your goal when the evidence is against you, when you have doubts, when it's hard, when you don't think it's worth it and you wanna quit, when your brain starts effing you over, you get to become the person that shows up for yourself.
That's who you get to become. And that is the thing that we should all be excited about with our goals. And that's what we talk about a lot with, again, our students that when they have these monetary goals, it's like, yes, set the big goals. You should have an ROI, you should have money coming in as a business owner. But who do you get to become as the entrepreneur that is willing to put that stake in the ground and say, I'm gonna get that goal, I'm going for it with all of me throughout the setbacks, throughout the doubts, throughout the times when I wanna throw my hands up and go back to my day job, I get to become that person. And that, my friends, is 1,000% in your control. So maybe you lose a bunch of weight, get super healthy, but what is most exciting is the person you get to become by actually going for your goals and seeing the process through and showing up for yourself.
That's the thing that should be the most exciting about all of this. Okay, another few questions that I think are really helpful, again, for the 360 view. What will I need from others? Oh my God, you guys, how many of us set goals and then like forget to ask for help? Whether that's official help, paid help, help from our loved ones, you know, it could be as simple as like, hey honey, can you order the groceries once a week? Because if I go to the grocery store, I end up buying chocolate. Or can you not buy, bring home fast food or pizza on Friday night? What is the thing that you need from other people? Again, can you have an accountability partner?
What are those things? Again, while you're sitting in the comfort of dreaming, can we come up with ideas that literally are just a conversation or a favor from somebody else? And again, you know, you also maybe, I need a paid childcare so I can go to the gym. You know, there may be some things like that as well. But again, brass tacks, what do you need?
And of course, then it would be actually asking for those things. The final question, which I think is so important is we know it's gonna get hard. We know there's gonna be times that you wanna quit. There's, we know there's gonna be times when you wanna like go back into the cave and say, screw it, this is impossible, I'm done. What's your plan when you have doubts, when you wanna quit, when it feels impossible, when you're working against yourself, where you feel yourself, what we call it in our certification is when you feel yourself going low vibe about your goal and you just don't feel super positive about it, that's a little red flag, it's not an emergency. But what are you gonna do about it when you get off track? What are you gonna do about it if you miss a workout? What are you gonna do about it if you eat the entire chocolate cake after your daughter's birthday?
Asking for a friend, right? Like we know those things are going to happen. What's your plan? What is your plan? Because here's what I know about goals. I know that most people have a lot of feelings about the goal. They have a lot of feelings about not achieving the goal and when we have those feelings, a lot of us isolate. A lot of us don't reach out. A lot of us don't ask for help. A lot of us don't lean in. A lot of us feel shame or disappointment in ourselves and we don't have a plan to get some coaching or talk to a friend or ask for help or just reach out. A lot of us don't do that.
And I'm speaking for myself too. So I'm gonna give you the questions again and I'll put them in the show notes also. So again, we're gonna 360 our goals.
We're gonna get really excited about who and what we're going to experience at the end of that goal. And it's not, again, in this case, being healthy. It's not really about losing weight, right? Let's get clear about what it's about, okay? What will it take? What will it really take? What's the cost? And some of that might be monetary. What can I do to increase the likelihood I'll be successful? What are the actual numbers behind it?
Aren't are they realistic? What's the best case scenario? What's the worst case scenario?
And would it still be worth it? Who am I going to become in the process of going for this goal? What will I need from others?
And what's my plan when I have doubts or wanna quit or it feels impossible? You guys, 360 your goals. Any of your goals.
