My name is Lindsey Wilson. It's Mental Monday. I want to talk real quick about the power of starting. So I was doing a bunch of podcasts today. And, you know, luckily in my work, I get to often ride the wave of like, I know my schedule, I know when I'm going to have high energy. I can kind of go with the flow to some degree.
I'm lucky in that sense. But there's also other times when, like all of us, I have to adults and do things that I don't actually feel like doing. And so I really want to talk about that today because I started doing a podcast and it's getting to be the afternoon. And for me, the afternoons is when my energy dips. I have a lot of energy in the morning and a lot of creative energy, a lot of like can do attitude. Like I have to get my hardest, most cognitively draining stuff done in the morning.
But it just happened that today I had some time in the afternoon and a quiet house, which I don't always have. And so I wanted to get some podcasts done. And I started doing a couple of them felt great.
And then I started feeling really tired. And, you know, I'm not on a hard deadline, but it is nice to get some done. I vouch them so I can get them done early so that, you know, other times when life gets crazy, I don't feel so rushed. So I wanted to talk about this because I remember this concept that one of my coaches, Peter Schmock, used to talk about, which is if you don't feel like working out, just do five minutes.
And I was thinking about that this afternoon because to be honest, I didn't want to do another podcast. And I thought, okay, but, but here's the other thing that I know is once I start something, I start feeling good. Like sometimes I don't want to write, sometimes I don't want to start on some project. But once I get over that initial like, often, not always, but often, I can get myself some momentum. And it's like my brain turns on. It's like, it's like the getting it on, it's like starting a car, it's like, that's the hardest part. But then once it's on, it stays on, it's a lot easier. And so I love that concept of just like doing something for five minutes.
So I wanted to share that. Because, you know, we all have to do things we don't want to do, or we don't feel like doing in the moment. And that's not to say that we always have to do like the most uncomfortable thing in the world. But sometimes you can do something for five minutes. And here's the thing he does, he goes, if you don't want to exercise after those five minutes, cool.
But most of the time, people do. So it's the five minute rule, guys, try the five minute rule. Next time you don't want to do something. And see how it goes.
