Lindsey 00:38
Hey, y'all, and welcome to the mindset coach Academy podcast, my voice is cracking. It's mental Monday, this is where we talked about one thing that you can implement tool or technique that you can implement today, to change your life, I want to talk about the two things that are always true.
Lindsey 00:57
And that is, number one, we can choose our thoughts. That changes our life. At that moment it'll change our thoughts. The second thing that is also true is in that moment when we need to change our thoughts, it feels almost impossible to do so. It feels almost impossible to remember to do so.
Lindsey 01:22
Because choosing our thoughts, especially choosing something more helpful for our well-being doesn't necessarily come naturally, we know our brain is hardwired for safety.
Lindsey 01:39
And so that's great on many, many levels. And it also at that moment activates our fight or flight, especially in emotional situations. And we don't always choose the thoughts that are going to be the best for us long term.
Lindsey 01:55
So what I want you to do today, is I want you to practice this, hopefully when the stakes aren't so high. So I would not encourage you to practice choosing your thoughts in the middle of a fight with your spouse if you haven't been doing it.
Lindsey 02:12
I mean, it'd be great. But I think that's pretty unrealistic, right? If you have, a difficult conversation coming up with your boss or co-worker, you can try to shift your thoughts at that moment before you get into that conversation. But if you haven't been doing it, it might be really difficult.
Lindsey 02:32
So what I want you to do, is I want you to just do it right now. Because what happens is, when we practice this, it gets easier and easier and easier. When we don't practice it becomes almost impossible to do at the moment that we needed the most.
Lindsey 02:50
Okay, so right now, what are you thinking? What is your thought about today? Or about your life? Or about your productivity? Or about how your body feels? Or about your confidence? Or what you're capable of? What is one single thought? Maybe it's something like, I feel overwhelmed. I have too much to do and too little time.
Lindsey 03:17
Or, I don't I don't feel good about why do things not work out for me. Or why do I not like my job, whatever that thought is just shifted ever so slightly to something else? So what this could look like is, let's do this, you take the time, and they are feeling overwhelmed. I have too much to do today and too little time is a very common one.
Lindsey 03:40
At this moment right now, can you shift that thought to, this is what I do? I have just enough time to get done the things that are important to me. When you can do it at this moment, this moment where you're listening to a podcast where the pressure is not on, there are no high stakes. When you're able to practice shifting your thought, you give yourself that mental rep that you are capable of shifting your thoughts whenever you want to.
Lindsey 04:12
So we can start raising the stakes, we can start practicing it, and other aspects of our life when things are a little emotional. You know in that fight with our spouse or right before that conversation with their co-worker, we can start practicing it.
Lindsey 04:24
But first, we want to do it in easier times. Like right now. Just practice shifting your thoughts and see how your body feels. See how athletes podcasts. And when you think I have just enough time to do what is most important to me how your brain then figures out how to get things done?
Lindsey 04:44
Thought shifting is hugely important. It is possible. But it takes practice because remember, those two things are true. We can shift our thoughts which shift our life and it's really hard to do at the moment if you haven't practiced it.
Lindsey 05:24
So practice it, practice it, practice it. Practice it at all the times that you can when you're washing the dishes. Pay attention to your thoughts. Can you shift it to something else? Just practice it, and play with it. Have fun with it. Have been curious about it.
Lindsey 05:24
